Freiburg is a laid-back college town known for its universities, mild weather, and ample vineyards. Freiburg is pretty far removed from other German cities and tourists will find that its culture is much more I can to that of France and Switzerland then Germany. Interestingly enough the citizens of Freiburg view their city as the California of Germany. There are many things to do in Freiburg besides just enjoy the mild weather. There is ample hiking opportunities into the Black Forest, and seemingly gargoyles wherever you turn. Seepark is a man-made lake that is popular among tourists and residents alike. Their visitors can enjoy the beer garden and restaurants before enjoying a lovely walk through the Greenbelt area.

Freiburg shopping is much like other small European cities in that it is mostly small local markets that pop up on the weekends. There is a daily local market that surrounds the main cathedral, though it is quite small during the week however on the weekend there is a large assortment of vendors hawking their wares. There are several large shopping centers as well as internationally known department stores selling anything anyone needs. Surprisingly United States visitors feeling a little bit homesick will find a Wal-Mart located in Freiburg.

Cars are not an important part of the Freiburg lifestyle, therefore tourists will not find a lot of car parking nor will they find ample opportunities to car hire in Freiburg . Most Freiburg residents get around on a bicycle, and tourists will have no problems finding a bike for rent. With that said, most of the attractions and tourist destinations are within walking distance of each other in the inner city. In fact cars and bikes are not allowed in the inner city in order to preserve the feel. Freiburg also has a decent public transportation system, though it is considered to be a little bit pricey. This system is composed of buses and trams that run across most of the city. Freiburg is also connected to Germany's highways and visitors wanting to get a little more bang for their buck will find that France is a mere 30 Minute Drive away.

Visitors will not find very many internationally known hotels in Freiburg; however that is not to say that a Freiburg hotel is difficult to find. Because of its location near the Black Forest there are many campgrounds that tourists may want to visit, otherwise there is a thriving bed-and-breakfast community that offers inexpensive rates and decent food. Naturally finding a Freiburg restaurant involves evaluating the numerous beer gardens available in the city. There you'll find delicious local cuisine paired up with large pints of ale. If local German food does not fit your palate there is a healthy smattering of Italian restaurants as well as American fast food restaurants available.
